Mosin Nagant Review for First Time Buyers

No doubt many of you out there are very familiar with the Mosin Nagant rifle, but for those of you out there who are thinking about purchasing your first Mosin Nagant or maybe have never given it a thought at all and simply just ignored the old milsurp rifle, this review may help you to make a decision.

First off this is a .30 caliber bolt action rifle with a straight bolt action and a 5 round box magazine. It has crude but usable sights similar to the AK47. It comes in at about 48.5″ inches with a 28.75″ inch barrel and weighs in at about 8.5 lbs.

Needless to say it’s a fairly long and heavy weapon by today’s standards although there are some variants like the M44 that come in a carbine length.

So while at first glace it may seem like just a big heavy rifle that can’t possibly compare to anything currently on the market there are a couple of things to take into consideration.

First off is the price, at somewhere around $100 bucks this is by far the best deal on a full caliber rifle your going to run across.

Second is the ammo, while not always widely available at your local dealers or sporting goods stores it is widely available online in bulk for extremely affordable prices, somewhere around $75 to $85 for a 440 round “spam can”.

Also as far as the ammo goes, this is a full .30 caliber round with more than enough stopping power for just about anything you might need to put down. Ballistically speaking the 7.62x54r round is almost identical to the .308 cartridge.

The rifle and cartridge together give you a package that offers good accuracy out to about 300 yards.

The Mosin also has quite a number of aftermarket accessories with everything from bent bolt kits and synthetic stocks to scout scope mounts.

Now one downside to the Mosin is that because its a milsurp rifle you’ll need to be prepared to spend a good amount of time cleaning off the cosmoline that was used to protect these rifles while in storage.

So bottom line we’re talking about being able to get a .30 caliber rifle with a 300 yard range and in a caliber thats extremely affordable for somewhere around $100 bucks ……. and at that price its a no brainer, get one and then wonder why you didn’t buy one years ago.
