This is a question that I think alot of people either wrongfully think they know the answer to or just have never thought about it unless they consider themselves a prepper.
One of the most accurate explainations of what a prepper is comes in the form of a story that many of us have heard or read, in fact I don’t think I know anyone who isn’t familiar with this story. Below is the story, or should I say fable, and after reading it we’ll discuss what a prepper is a little further.
The Ant and the Grasshopper
In a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
“Why not come and chat with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of toiling and moiling in that way?”
“I am helping to lay up food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and recommend you to do the same.”
“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper; we have got plenty of food at present.” But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew:
It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.
So thats it, we’ve all heard the story, but how many of us have taken its message to heart? Its really a simple message, prepare for what tomorrow might bring. Its a truely great example of what a prepper is not just because the mentality to prepare is showcased as a recommended and common sense action, but because the mere fact that this story exsists shows that prepping is not some new phenomenon but something that has been around for thousands of years since this story was written around 500 BCE.
Remember its not prepping that is new, its the laziness and convenience that we have fallen victim to that is the new and damaging phenomenon. We as a species have survived on the earth for as long as we have by being prepared for the worst and surviving. The laziness we have fallen into goes against everything that our ancestors tried to pass on to us.
Isn’t it smart to keep a generator if u live in an area that experiences power outages because of weather? Isn’t it smart to keep a spare tire in your car? These are all ways that we prep and evidence that we haven’t just yet lost our instinct to be prepared, but everyday we get farther and farther away from what has kept us alive for so long.
Prepping isn’t the sign of a mentally unstable person, its not just for the “Survivalist” or “Militiaman” living in the woods. Its also for everyone out there just trying to make it to the next day. Imagine how useful prepping could be to someone who lost their job and could no longer afford to go to the store to feed their family. How useful would an extra month or two of food and water be to that person.
So again lets ask ……. What is prepping?
Prepping is just a part of being human and showing a little common sense to be ready for the things that can happen in this world.
